Kiyohime

Kiyohime is a character in a Japanese legend "Legend of Anchin/Kiyohime" took place in Toujouji Temple. It is based on books like "Dainihonkoku Hokkegenki", "Konjaku Monogatari shuu", and "Kojiki".

In 928, a very handsome young monk Anchin visited Kumano in the country of Kii. A local girl Kiyohime fell in love with him by just one look. She visited Anchin's accommodation to score him. However, Anchin refused her offer as he's just visiting Kumano as a monk. He promised to visit her on his way home, but he went straight home.

Kiyohime realised that Anchin ignored her, so she ran out on bare foot to chase him. On a way to Doujouji Temple, Kiyohime caught Anchin, but Anchin pretended he's not Anchin. In the end, Anchin asked Kumano Gongen to stop her with magic and ran away. Kiyohime's anger reached higher than highest. She transformed into a giant snake and chased Anchin.

Anchin ran into Doujouji Temple and hid himself in a giant bronze bell. Kiyohime chased him after breathing flame. Kiyohime tied the bell around and burned Anchin to death. After killing Anchin, Kiyohime went into a river to commit suicide.
